What you don’t know could hurt your engine.

Debris in and around engine lifters is often the result of dirty engine oil. Don’t panic. Change your oil, and if needed, replace your lifters.

Many people don’t realize that debris within your engine could be to blame for engine failure. As your engine ages and mileage increases, components such as lifters can get bogged down with extra debris in the oil from normal wear and tear.

What does this mean for you?

Many engine parts lose their warranty when you disassemble them yourself to clean them, plus it can be a major hassle. A lifter for example has 6 pieces, including a tiny spring, metering valve, and retainer clip, Small pieces like these can easily go missing when taken apart. In cases where small parts like lifters become clogged, it usually is best just to replace those parts.

A lifter is made up of 6 pieces. The body, which is the outer casing, the plunger, which sits inside the body, the plunger spring, metering valve, plunger cap, and plunger retaining clip. The Anatomy of a lifter is shown in the image below.  A lifter acts as a one-way oil valve, which expands and contracts to pass oil through. The plunger within a lifter can get stuck down with debris to where it cannot extend back out to complete this important function. This is bad news for your engine.

Lifters can become clogged with very little debris, causing your engine to fail. 

Engine issues are very intimidating for the average driver and diagnosing this problem may be difficult unless you know what to look for.  

A stuck valve lifter will make a tapping noise. Dirt and oil debris can form around your lifters causing this sound. Oil sludge makes it difficult for the lifters to function properly. This is an indication there may a problem with the oil, especially in an older vehicle. It’s also possible that a lifter might just be worn and needs to be replaced. If you had a worn or faulty lifter, the only way for you to address the problem is to change out the lifter.
