Car Care Step 2: Battery

To examine a car battery, begin with a visual inspection for any signs of damage, such as corrosion, bulging, or leaks. Next, utilize a voltmeter to measure the battery’s voltage, confirming it is above 12.4V. Lastly, perform a load test, which mimics engine cranking to evaluate the battery’s capacity to manage heavy loads. *Always read all safety warning labels and apply common sense when handling car batteries.
Car Care Step 3: Tires
Ensuring that your tire tread is sufficiently deep is crucial for safe driving. To evaluate tire wear, you can visually check for wear bars, use a tread depth gauge, or perform the penny test. For the penny test, insert a penny into the tread with Lincoln’s head facing downwards; if you can see his head, it signifies that the tire is worn out.
For winter weather prep, consider switching to winter tires if you live in an area that experiences heavy snowfall or icy conditions. These tires provide better traction and safety on slippery roads.
Car Care Step 4: Heating System
To evaluate your car’s heating system, begin by checking the coolant levels and searching for any leaks in the heater hoses, you may have already done this when you checked your fluid levels in step 1. Next, turn on the heater to see if hot air is produced, and test the blower fan at various speeds. If the engine temperature stays low, inspect the thermostat, and look for any blockages or issues with the blend door and actuators.

To check your car’s wiper blades, start by lifting the wiper arm. Clean the rubber with a cloth and some washer fluid, then carefully examine the rubber edge for any signs of damage, such as cracks, tears, or rounded edges. While using the wipers, pay attention to their performance and look for any streaking, chattering, or squeaking sounds. If any of these are present, it’s time to replace them!
To properly inspect your car’s lights, take a walk around the vehicle while the lights are illuminated. Make sure that all headlights, tail lights, brake lights, turn signals, and hazard lights are working as they should. Activate the high beams and assess the beam pattern and intensity; high beams are crucial during winter storms to help you navigate safely back home.
