Remember, these reliability scores are not the full picture, reliability varies from model-to-model across a brand, and from year-to-year within the same model. A top ranked SUV can share the same parent brand as a lowly-ranked sedan, so the year and model does matter! Additionally, a higher reliability score doesn’t necessarily mean lower repair costs. Lower repair costs don’t always correlate with higher reliability.
It’s also important to understand that “commonly repaired” does not equate to “unreliable”. Rather, it relates to several other factors, including the popularity of these brands on the road today. Furthermore, if you compare Nissan’s 12 complaints per 1,000 with its 77/100 reliability score, you can see that the brand does perform well overall. Nissan is well known for its long life. The same goes for brands like Buick – its repair frequency is likely influenced more by the mix of models and their age and mileage.
